The Best JRPG Games Available on Nintendo Switch

From Persona 5 Royal to the very recent Super Mario RPG Remake: here are the best JRPG games available on the Nintendo Switch console

Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the main strengths of Nintendo’s handheld console is the fact that we can have it with us at all times, wherever we are, to experience unforgettable adventures (an obvious point I know but I needed a start for the article). And the best journeys are those experienced with games in the JRPG genre:that is why today I want to gather a list with Japanese RPGs available in the Nintendo Switch catalog that you must try.

Be prepared for hundreds and hundreds of hours of play. In fact, the titles I will present have such high longevity that it is likely that once you have completed them all, the long-awaited Switch 2 will have already hit the market. Let’s roll up our sleeves because there is no shortage of valuable works.

Sea of Stars

Let’s start right away with one of the newest JRPGs on this list, which we also included among the Best Games arrived on Xbox Game Pass in 2023: available from August 29 on Nintendo Switch, Sony and Microsoft consoles and on PC, Sea of Stars literally made all lovers of the genre fall in love with it to the point that it won the award of Best Indie Game at the last The Game Awards 2023.

Sea of Stars is, first of all, a great homage to the old turn-based RPGs. At the same time, however, the developers at Sabotage Studio have tried to modernize the gameplay by deciding to abandon random fighting and grinding so as to provide a more sustained pace to their IP. Accompanying it all is excellent art and sound direction that round out an adventure lasting about thirty hours that is exciting and engaging.

Persona 5 Royal

It is impossible not to mention Persona 5, one of the best games of the last console generation. The Royal version available for Switch enriches the original 2017 work with new characters and confidants, stories and new mechanics such as one that revolves around the use of a grappling hook useful for accessing never-before-seen areas.

Persona 5 Royal

Atlus’s JRPG, with attention to every single detail, is the best you could ask for in Role Playing Games. Will you be able to handle the dual identities of Persona 5 Royal’s protagonists torn between school, homework and saving the world?

Super Mario RPG Remake

We have already discussed Super Mario RPG Remake in our special article dedicated to the Best Super Mario Games Available on Nintendo Switch and in our review (which you can always find within the list highlighted in red): the production of the Japanese software house made together with studio ArtePiazza, polishes up the historic JRPG released in 1996 dedicated to the Moustached Plumber.

Super Mario RPG Remake 1

Super Mario RPG Remake is a rather accessible RPG in its mechanics, perfect, therefore, for those who want to approach the genre for the first time and which echoes in all aspects the gameplay and narrative of the original work. ArtePiazza’s efforts have focused on improving the combat system with special abilities that allow the party to be enhanced both offensively and defensively.

Octopath Traveler 2

In June 2023 Square Enix released the sales of Octopath Traveler 2, sequel to the first chapter of the Acquire-developed JRPG (a third mobile chapter, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, is available for free): we are at over one million copies distributed worldwide.

Octopath Traveler 2 Switch

Octopath Traveler 2 is set in Solistia, in a different era than the prequel: in addition to the classic turn-based combat typical of Japanese RPGs (which, however, has several peculiarities), eight playable characters should be noted, each with his or her own personal storyline and endowed with unique characteristics to be enhanced by progressing in the main quest.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age

After Octopath Traveler 2, Square Enix returns with its Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, the eleventh installment of the historic JRPG saga born in 1985 from the mind of Yūji Horii in collaboration with Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump manga, and Kōichi Sugiyama.

Dragon Quest XI Nintendo Switch

The mechanics of Dragon Quest XI are those typical of the series, so don’t expect any major changes in gameplay: the player as the protagonist can move around the map by traversing the various outdoor and indoor play areas (dungeons), managing different party members and dealing with the countless types of enemies and boss he will encounter on his journey in the most classic turn-based combat, .

Xenoblade Chronicles 3

After Persona 5 and Dragon Quest, the other great JRPG saga we must necessarily mention is that of Xenoblade Chronicles: chapter 3 developed by Monolith Soft is one of the best exclusives you can find on Nintendo Switch. A mammoth work directed by Tetsuya Takahashi.

The world to explore is literally gigantic. In addition, compared with previous titles in the series, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 allows all seven party members to be used simultaneously in combat by changing them in real time. Finally, another important new feature is the presence of Classes through which to customize the play style of characters.

Chained Echoes

The last name on this list is Chained Echoes, the solo title developed by Matthias Linda, a German guy who managed to complete his little gem after seven years of hard work and also thanks to a fundraising campaign launched on Kickstarter in 2019.

Chained Echoes

Chained Echoes won the hearts of audiences and critics alike because of its excellent combat system and character growth that was quite peculiar to its genre. Rather than focusing on accumulating experience points (and thus facing a large number of random encounters), in fact, players will have to concentrate on unlocking the unique abilities of each party member.
